The Carbon Block filters that Only Pure H₂O utilize have all of the advantages of activated carbon that is formed into a solid block with a sub-micron structure.  All of the water filters that Only Pure H₂O filters utilize advanced Pentek Carbon Block filters from Pentair, Inc in some part of their process. 

Carbon filtration removes volatile organic compounds (VOC's) which make up most of our pharmaceuticals and prescription drugs, herbicides, pesticides, etc. that are increasingly appearing in our water systems.  The advanced Pentek filters from Pentair, Inc also removes the tiny microbes and the more difficult to remove chemical compounds.  Lastly, the solid block construction prevents the water from channeling around the filter media.  Other cheaper carbon filters use only Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) or more cheaply made and less effective carbon block filters.

You have several options, all of which will utilize the same advanced Pentek Carbon Block filters:   

The Countertop Filters

These are by far the easiest to set up and use.  In fact they are as easy to set up and use as any "Brita" or "PUR" type water filter and are no more or less in the way when using the sink for other purposes.  They are available in white and chrome and include all of the connectors you need to connect it to any standard faucet.  They both utilize an advaced Carbon Block filter rated for 20,000 gallons and will remove all chlorine taste and odor as well as other VOC's.  They also reduce Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Entamoeba, and Toxoplasma cysts and fine sediment particles down to 0.5 microns.  Depending on use, you might need to change the filter cartridge every 5-10 years.  This carbon block filter cartridge is one of the best available and is NOT the cheap cartridge found in your typical tap water filter sold elsewhere. 

The Under Sink Filters

The under sink filters require some installation, although the installation is actually fairly simple.  If you are handy with a few tools or know someone who is, less than an hour of effort to install the filter will reward you with a lifetime of clean and safe drinking water.  There is both a 1 stage and a 2 stage under sink filter.  They both utilize an advanced Carbon Block filter rated for 20,000 gallons and will remove all chlorine taste and odor as well as other VOC's.  They also reduce Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Entamoeba, and Toxoplasma cysts and fine sediment particles down to 0.5 microns.  Depending on use, you might need to change the filter cartridge every 5-10 years.  The two stage filter also utilizes a second carbon block pre-filter to further extend the life of the filter.  These carbon block filter cartridges are among the most expensive available and are NOT the cheap cartridges found in your typical tap water filters sold elsewhere. 

The Reverse Osmosis Filter

Only Pure H₂O offers a complete 5 Stage Reverse Osmosis filter for those who want the absolute purest water possible. 

The first part of the RO filter is a pre-filter used to filter larger particles of sediment and extend the life of the next stages.  The next two stages are the same high quality carbon block filters used in all the other Only Pure H2O filters.  At the next stage there is an RO membrane.  This RO membrane works by forcing water, under pressure, against a semi-permeable membrane which will remove any particles larger than a water molecule.  The fifth stage is yet another carbon filter or an optional Deionization resin filter (DI unit) for further purification and to ensure ALL Volatile Organic Compounds are removed. 

The only downside of the RO filter is they filter the water slowly and therefore they require a storage tank to give an adequate supply of readily available water. Also, there is some waste water as a by-product of the reverse osmosis process and so a wastewater line needs to be connected to the drain under a sink. This makes installing the RO filter slightly more complicated than the other under sink filters.  Also, the membrane in the filter will remove metals such as lead, but it also removes minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium. The end result will be very pure and very soft water.  For most people the Carbon Block filters in the countertop and under sink filters are more than adequate. 

The Whole House Filter

Only Pure H₂O offers two whole house filters.  A single stage whole house filter and a two stage whole house filter.  Both will need to be installed by a plumber or someone with advanced knowledge of plumbing.  The first utilizes a 20 inch, 4 1/4 inch diameter Carbon filter in a large 7 1/4" x 7 1/4" x 24 1/2" canister with either 3/4" or 1" threaded openings.  The two stage whole house filter includes a second large canister with a 50 micron pre-filter to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the Carbon filter.

There are two options for the carbon filtration.  The first is a Carbon Block cartridge which uses a revolutionary new technology that makes it possible to obtain cyst reduction in a cartridge that functions like a nominal 10-micron cartridge. This product boasts extremely low pressure drops and high flow rates – comparable to 10-micron (very open) carbon cartridges. Its efficiency is so high that a 0.5-micron rating is possible, which means that cysts and very small particles can be removed to create cleaner, safer water.  The Carbon Block filter is rated to 50,000 gallons.  Depending on use, the filter should be changed every 6-18 months.  

There is a second carbon filter available which does not offer cyst reduction or as effective filtration of small particles but is rated to 500,000 gallons.  However, it is very effective at removing larger particles, chloramines, chlorine, and other volatile organic compounds.  Depending on use, this filter will only need to be changed every 3-10 years. 

These whole house filters are suitable for most average sized homes (up to 2500 ft2) with good water pressure.  The single stage is adequate if your tap water is relatively free of sediment but if you water is has sediment in it then the two stage filter should be used.  Beware of companies selling small and cheap sediment filters and marketing them as "whole house" filters as these will be useless for most users.   

Although whole house filters are great, for most people a simple point of use household water filter along with KDF (see below) showerhead filters are more than adequate.

The process also has a mild anti-bacterial, algaecitic, and fungicitic, effect and may reduce the accumulation of lime scale.  Because of its effectiveness at higher water temperatures, it is often used on shower water filtration systems to remove chlorine and other contaminants.
